Robert De Niro, the renowned actor, has a deep affection for New York City, where he was born and raised. He has spent much of his adult life in different homes throughout the state. De Niro has famously said, “I go to Paris, I go to London, I go to Rome, and I always say, ‘There’s no place like New York. It’s the most exciting city in the world now. That’s the way it is. That’s it.'” His love for the city has led him to invest in its arts and culture scene, including co-founding TriBeCa Productions and opening Tribeca Grill.
De Niro’s real estate portfolio reflects his commitment to the city. One of his notable properties is a West Village town house, which he owned for approximately 37 years. He purchased the 5,000-square-foot home in 1975 for $190,000 and sold it in 2012 for $9.5 million.
The West Village town house, built in 1852, features three bedrooms, 12-foot ceilings, and a primary suite with a private terrace. De Niro’s other properties include an inherited Montauk beach house, which was left to him by his father, and an Ulster County estate, which he purchased in 1997 for $1.5 million.
The Ulster County estate sits on 78 acres of land and includes a 2,222-square-foot house, which De Niro renovated to suit his growing family’s needs. The property features six bedrooms, seven bathrooms, and a 14,000-square-foot recreation center with a gym, a boxing room, and a swimming pool.
De Niro also owns properties outside of New York state, including a London flat, which he purchased in 2001 for £750,000. The two-bedroom apartment features a roof terrace and 360-degree views. In New York City, De Niro has owned several properties, including a Central Park West apartment, which he purchased with his then-wife Grace Hightower in 2006 for $20.9 million.

The couple’s Upper West Side apartment was devastated by a dryer-induced fire in 2012, and they were forced to find alternate living arrangements while the unit was rehabilitated.
De Niro has also rented several properties in New York City, including a stunning duplex penthouse in Greenwich Village.
His commitment to New York City will likely continue, and his real estate portfolio will probably remain a reflection of his love for the city. It’s possible that he will continue to invest in properties that align with his interests and values, further solidifying his connection to the city.
De Niro’s latest project is a penthouse suite at the Greenwich Hotel, which he partially owns. The 6,800-square-foot unit was designed by Belgian designer Axel Vervoordt and Japanese architect Tatsuro Miki, and features a neutral color palette, wood, stone, and reclaimed materials.
The penthouse suite’s design is a reflection of De Niro’s appreciation for the city’s unique character. As he told journalists on the scene, “Tribeca has its own ambience and feeling. Axel wanted to respect that and pull in elements of the city. It is more than interior design: It is art.” This approach to design is also evident in other homes that blend art and everyday living, showcasing the importance of incorporating local character into design.
